The yellowed tops of the long grasses
so arrogant above the shallow snow
taking directions to the road
to that bit of dust

The fence looks like
empty arms
trying to hold in the world

What am I going to do with me?

I came with some hopes
I thought
though I couldn’t draw a real circle
to save my life

The bedding cannot stay
that way
The garden holds court
while leafless trees try to run away in shame

Still you tell
the fleeing runner the
one who’s up on top of the words
to slow down
to breathe

To take some time out…
