I stopped looking for you.

Right before the smoke was sighted,
right before the embers
melded into the mud,
right before the fog cleared away
and the rain-washed air yielded
one fresh breath,
I stopped looking for you.

In the woods of time,
in the wildernesses
of fantasies and dreams,
in the milling crowds
and their monotonous drone,
in the echoes from deep wells,
I stopped looking for you.

From where the river springs,
from where I end and you begin,
from the white-picket fence
of our little swollen hearts,
from the touch of your voice
on my soul's window,
I stopped looking for you.
