The transition was striking. The weather changed suddenly. The clear sunny sky that existed a minute ago was no longer visible. Dark clouds gathered and dust particles accumulated in the fresh air. The sudden darkness warned of an incoming storm.

Roy remained seated in his chair, lost in thoughts, unaware of the changes happening outside. The ringing of the doorbell startled him and he begrudgingly got up to open the door.

He never expected what transpired next. As he opened the door, someone pushed him to the ground. He blinked his eyes as his attacker closed the door. Before he could react, his assailant climbed over him and Roy never got the chance to fight back.

He felt the cold blade slide beneath his ribs, the pain that followed was unbearable. As the blade slid out of his body, he tried to get up, but immediately the sharp metal returned.

The pain was too much to bear, he screamed, but a strong blow silenced him. Soon the pain dissolved along with the lights. Something warm and sticky trickled on the side of his body as Roy lost consciousness.

The assailant kept shouting something, but Roy never understood what the masked man wanted to say. He never understood why this man attacked him.

“It’s all your fault. You… You did this to me. Your mistakes destroyed me. My life got spoiled because of your weaknesses. I… I was shattered due to your stupid decisions, completely ruined because of your useless habits. You’re responsible for all the things that happened to me. You… You could have done things differently, you could have walked on different paths. You should have made better choices, but you never did and I paid for all your wrongdoings,” the assailant shouted as he stabbed Roy.

He continued to stab Roy’s lifeless body while shouting, “It’s all your fault. It’s all your fault. It’s all your fault.”

He finally stopped when he realized that Roy was dead. Tears streamed down his eyes as he removed the wet mask.

An elder Roy stood over his own dead body.

After years of struggle, today he had finally discovered the tiny crack in time. Today he had managed to return to his past. He had struggled with this thought for years, but today he found the courage to finish his past self, to finish himself.

Now none of those things would happen. All those mistakes needed to be rectified and today he had achieved that. Now he could finally be at peace.

With a last smile on his face, Roy began to wither to dust that escaped through the window and mingled with the particles outside.

All that was left was the dead body of a young man with no sign of his assailant.
