Sunrise Over The Mediterranean

It begins in the dark
a field of emptiness
framed by inarticulate geometry
planes and surfaces with nothing to reflect
but umbric shades and memories

Two sounds intrude
compelling
competing
it’s far too early to rise
it’s far too late

Brilliance at five hundred trillion Hertz
rips across the nothing
a single bar of neon
announcing the opening of the day
by re-enacting tales of old
first light
then water
silent voice of the creator
moving through the void at impossible speed
over its rippling face

Intensity fades, widens, bleeds
an infinite analog gradient
indefinite and fleeting,
the infant of prismatic skies

While below, the defiant sea
refuses to release its hold
cobalt horizon
the cresting waves like a million reaching hands
all claiming pieces of the departing night
until it is swallowed up entire
and held safely below the surface
protected from the banishing rays above
until the eye of the sun has turned
and it is safe to emerge once again

Shapes resolve in the lightening gloom
cuboid chambers, parallel lines
uniformity used as a shield for human ego
a declaration, a desire
to emulate the ocean in its obstinate glory
the boxes we make for ourselves
proof against the chaos
that is
that always has been
that always will be

But no matter how we grind
mix
pour
stack
join
forge
weld
smooth
sand
polish
finish
manipulate

the lines begin to bend, crumble, bleed
jagged cracks imitate lightning in their form
but not in their speed
appearing in response to an errant seed
taking hold in materials of earthen make
spreading imperceptibly
fixed at any particular moment
yet always and forever in motion
like the sun, rising
from an obdurate, oily sea.
