The Lessons from the Sea Mist

A poem about mindfulness and mist

The mist settled down onto our shores,
slipping into the spaces
we don’t usually notice.

The gaps between
that seemingly create
separation.

The mist creates a unity,
a oneness, as we slowly
make our way,
uncertain in our steps
forward into the unknown, the unseen.

This is how we should always live life,
carefully, mindfully, lovingly
fully conscious of each and every
step we make,
of how it will end up,
where it will lead us,
will we hurt someone else?

The mist will soon lift
human confidence
marches ahead once more.
Will the gift of this lesson be recognized?

Will the illusion of clear vision
allow so many to still walk
blindly into the future,
to still do so much harm
whilst being so unaware?

Can we all learn to walk mindfully,
thinking each step lovingly?
Can we learn
there is always a mist around us,
even when it is unseen?

We live on an island and every so often we are covered in a sea mist that settles down until the sun can burn it off. In January that tends not to happen and it remains all day. My husband came home from visiting his 96 yr old mother and said how slowly everyone was driving, how thick the mist was further along the coast. From his description, this chain of thoughts arose in me and the poem asked to be written down.
