feet on the cutting plateau
of a glacial lakeside rock
my eyes on the water
rolling in
and out again
each crest and fall whispering
“hush”
“hush”

in the sunlight there are diamonds on the waves

green and blue the water goes on
and on
further than I can fathom
and fathoms deep

there is power in the water

the force of the waves cuts into the sand
drags stones and branches into the surge

gulls try to float out on a wave
and are tossed back to shore
they shake themselves out
and try again

they are powerless
as we are
to stop the water
