I was speaking with another when she
wandered by.

Suddenly the woman I was sitting across from
didn’t matter at all;
finally, here was that inexplicable magnetism
I’d heard so much about —

I didn’t want to be here in the
first place,
but circumstance had delivered me,
to find a diamond
in a sea of the barely tolerable,

making this toil
worthwhile,
a ray of light in the smog.

That’s when she looked at me
with those deep,
accommodating eyes
smiled warmly,

and asked,

Is there anything else I can help you
with
today,
sir?
