Vocabulary in The Masque of the Red Death
Vocabulary is not always understood by everyone. Some words are not known to a reader, but the general definition can be determined by the context it is found in. Sometimes, we think we know the meaning of the word, but don’t quite get it right. Reviewing a list of vocabulary before you read can be beneficial as well as reading it afterwards. Review the list before you read and after to get a complete understanding of the story.

Pestilence — anything destructive; a disease that is not easily contained or conquered.
Avatar — incarnation of a deity or idea in human form.
Seal — a usually ornamental adhesive stamp that may be used to close a letter or package
Profuse — pouring forth liberally; exhibiting great abundance
Dissolution — the act or process of dissolving
Dauntless — incapable of being intimidated or subdued
Sagacious — having or showing deep understanding and intelligent application of knowledge
Hale — enjoying health and vigor
Crenellated — having crenellations, or battlements
