Everyday Stories #34
The stairway of the elves
Each step is a prayer
They told me about the stairway of the elves
It exists
It was invented by everyone who walked down it
Circumnavigating shopping bags on the landing
Waiting
Under the sun
The mailbox red, proud, enamelled
And bow your head to the afternoon cloudbursts
And then
Then a clue, a glow, an emerald rustle
a step that begins
they say
from desire
from meticulous confusion
from the enchantment of the land that ends
The stairway of the elves is uphill
If climbs were metaphors
we could face them as one faces a dragon
or a book
Instead you need breathing, discouragement
knowing how to regulate the pace
Each step is a prayer
Let the effort, O Lord, take its course
Allow me, O Lord, to stumble in my shadow
And may the magic remain secret
disclosed
in the yellow of the buttercup
in the orange of the marigold
Finally we arrive
Because the end of the climb is but the precious time we have walked
And at the top is us
the same weight the same smile
but a little higher up
Mi hanno raccontato della scala degli elfi
Esiste
L’hanno inventata
tutti quelli che l’hanno percorsa
Circumnavigare le buste della spesa sul pianerottolo
Restare in attesa
Sotto al sole
la cassetta della posta
rossa, fiera, smaltata
E in cima ci siamo noi
null’altro che noi
lo stesso peso lo stesso sorriso
ma
un poco più in alto
