Another Fallen “Idol” | Book review
A book review of Louise O’Neill’s novel
In Idol, Louise O’Neill offers us the darker aftermath of the cliché revenge fantasy many of us had when growing up: someday, you’d shed your teenage ugliness and transform into an irresistible woman, whose successful career would put you in a spotlight so everyone who ever hurt you regrets how they treated you. But, more importantly, they would realise how much happier you are than them — and that is the ultimate win. And while that can be the ending of a teen romcom, what Idol does is show readers how that fantasy plays out in the future for a character you are bound to hate.
Readers meet Sam Miller at the peak of her career as a “wellness” influencer. After leaving her distanced parents, overcoming drug addictions and eating disorders, surviving sexual abuse, and building up her own brand meant to inspire young women to embrace the best versions of themselves, she is launching her latest book. In it, she reveals she once slept with her childhood best friend Lisa, and even though they were not in speaking terms anymore and it was more of a sexual experiment, she treasured that memory.
