Shortly after Samuel Beckett died in December 1989 I decided to treat myself to a copy of the one novel of his I still hadn’t read. It would serve as a Christmas present to myself and a tribute to the recently deceased Nobel Laureate.

On a busy Saturday, I pushed my way among the mass of last minute shoppers in the Waterstones on Charing Cross Road. After browsing the fiction shelves and having no luck finding what I was looking for, I approached the clerk at the till.

“I can’t find the book I’m looking for,” I said.

“Tell me what you’re looking for and I’ll see if we have it in stock.”

“Watt,” I said.

“Tell me what you’re looking for and I’ll see if we have it in stock,” he said.

“Yes, I know,” I said.
