My obsession began in 2006, when Dexter Morgan was introduced to audiences as the notorious blood-spatter analyst with a long history of family members in the same police department. However, Miami Metro’s right-hand man continued to hide his secret: that he was a serial killer. Dexter, his police officer sister, along with several of his other co-workers, are made responsible for attempting to solve these mysterious murders and disappearances that pop-up all over town.

Dexter Morgan’s secret remains unknown to everyone besides his late, adoptive father whom continues to reappear to advise Dexter as his life continues. “The Code” is the set of guidelines that assist in his attempt to make his community These killing impulses are left to some crucial criteria that each individual must fit into: he or she must be a repeating offender whom harms people in some way or another. As the years go on and the viewers get an inside look into Mr. Morgan’s life, we’re introduced to his girlfriend, Rita, and her two young children. His unstoppable fire to kill these offenders continues to burn as Dexter uses his and his sister’s position at the police station to hear and look into these men that are under watch or the department has insufficient evidence to prosecute. Dexter spends a great deal of his time tampering with evidence and exploring the information that the department’s database can offer him. He creates an insider’s view for all viewers to take a look into the mind and thoughts that a serial killer possesses.

Without giving away any spoiler alerts… this show produces entertaining, yet unrealistic qualities of a forensic scientist’s, with a specialization in blood spatter, job description. The daily visits to crime scenes and few hours spent inside of his lab is quite the opposite workspace that today’s average blood spatter analyst would be exposed to. On several occasions, viewers are shown impractical uses of evidence. For example, Dexter is seen taking fingerprints from doorknobs and using strands of hair to determine an identity in several episodes, which cannot be realistically interpreted within modern day forensics.

So when it comes into question… Are Dexter Morgan’s actions justified? Is there a difference of right and wrong between killing the innocent and killing one who is guilty? His killing comes down to being morally excusable. He is removing the harmful from the society in which the innocent reside. He’s a sympathetic character that has experienced traumatic experiences in his life, which lead him to pursue the life he is paving his way through.

This eight-season show takes audiences through the love, loss, and thrills that puncture the emotional armor that Dexter Morgan protects himself with. This show projects a man, who considers himself to be emotionless and empty on the inside, as he begins to experience feelings of “fondness” for his sister, significant other, and children. This show definitely took me on an emotional rollercoaster and several episodes of intense anxiety, but it provided a great deal of insight into the mind of a serial killer and what drives him or her. Watchers are able to hear the thoughts Dexter thinks when he’s put into the sticky situations that are a result of his spider web of lies. This highly intelligent man teaches the viewers of his urges to kill that create a hollow person inside of him. Overall, Dexter provides a thrilling storyline for people of all ages to witness the unbelievable acts that a serial killer does.
