Hemingway is a fantastic little tool when you’re trying to refine your prose into something more direct and easily digestible. It does this by evaluating your writing in real time using a small variety of criteria.

It’s offered as a downloadable program and a more capable web app. It may not always check your grammar or spelling, but it does check the grade level you’re writing at. This is very helpful when you want to ensure the highest number of potential readers through accessible text.
It can even suggest alternatives to what you’ve put and, in the web app, can use AI in many creative ways to help you out. That is, however, part of their paid plans. Hemingway’s free plan gets you on the web app with all the basic functions.
It’s nice to have a “second set of eyes”
There are some issues with it like imperfect suggestions and sentences being marked “very hard to read” simply due to length, like this one, but those are quite rare and easily overlooked.
It’s nice to have a “second set of eyes” on your writing to check for complexity. It’s easy to think your own material sounds good because, well, you wrote it! If you’ve had experience with Hemingway, let me know how it worked for you!
I have two honorable mentions that are also free. First is something called Goblin Tools which offers a variety of AI tools with options for free. It’s very helpful in AI-assisted rephrasing for a wide variety of settings, task breakdown, estimation, and more. Perhaps it’s the perfect tool to use in conjuction with Hemingway!
The second is ChatGPT. My personal belief is, love it or hate it, AI Large Language Models are the future of so much of our technology. Though there are many legitimate complaints and concerns about it, it is still a tool to be used to our advantage. You can use it for text or audio chat for anything you can think of. Be mindful that the responses you get will only be as good as the information you give it.
