Why we sing ‘in church’?
Psalm 149:1
Praise the Lord. Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of his faithful people.
When friends and family come together we usually spend time talking, eating and generally hanging out. Personally I love bbqing or sitting in a comfy chair and sharing stories. But what makes getting together as a church additionally special?
It’s praise. The family of God praise Him when they spend time together.
It’s an interesting thing to think about? Unless you’re in a choir or love karaoke, usually people don’t spend social time singing. But when Christians come together we recognise God and praise him. And a great way to do this all together at the same time is to sing.
So what do we sing?
- A new song – nothing stagnant without relevant meaning
- His praise – something honouring with personal meaning
Faithful people sing. Faithful people are not good people – just ones committed to God who make a habit of making him central when they get together!
In 149:5 praising God is described as an honour. Praising Him together is honouring and God loves it (149:4).
This is why we sing in church.
