If Your Life Was A Nutrition Label What Would It Say?
Anyone who has ever been on any kind of health kick knows the importance of knowing what is going into your body. Whether you’re on the look out for crazy amounts of sugar, or toxic chemicals, this means you need to start reading food labels. Checking ingredient lists, number of servings per package, and the levels of fat in a product, can really help you figure out what a food is made of.
My theory is that people aren’t that different from food. I mean we all love food and everything (pizza is bae). But, what if people came with a food label that told us what they’re made of?
Here are some of my ideas of what our people labels would look like:
Your ingredients list would be all the people who make up your life.
The people you surround yourself with make up who you are. Haven’t you ever noticed that the more you hang out with someone, the more of their little traits you pick up? The sayings like “it’ll buff out” and “yeah man” that magically started appearing in your speech? They are now part of your vocabulary because the people you are in contact with have said them, a LOT.
Think about your best friend and how they’ve impacted your life. Or even that person who showed you what it was like for someone to love you for the first time. They are ingrained into who you are. You pick up pieces of the people who influence your life. That’s why people are always saying to be careful who you let into your life. They have a larger impact on you than you might want to admit.
Your experiences make up your serving sizes.
And no, I’m not talking experience you can put on your resume here, but that’s kind of part of it. I’m talking about that situation you had to figure out all by yourself. Like that time you pulled an all-nighter with your best friend because she was freaking out about her calc final. You had no reason to stay up all night besides moral support for her. That’s one serving of yourself. Or that time you just hopped into a car and drove north because you and your roommate needed to get away from all the college drama for a couple of hours. That’s another.
These moments seem random and unimportant when you look at the events of your whole life, but they still have determined what you are made of. The fact that you blasted “Shake It Off” all the way back to campus now links that song with that experience. And every time you watch One Direction’s video for “Best Song Ever” you are instantly taken back to that study room where you drank more coffee than you thought possible.
Your emotions would be the Nutrient levels.
You’ve been through a lot, everyone has. You’ve had your heart crushed multiple times. You’ve felt pain and sadness and that starts to add up. These bitter moments are like the sodium and total fat levels of who you are. But, we can’t leave out the vitamin percentage. The part of a product we all want to maximize. These are the experiences you find yourself in that end up creating the very best memories. Like when you laughed so hard that you thought you would die (or pee) right then and there. That moment which turned into a memory, is what we hold on to when everything else seems to be falling to pieces.
All of the situations, people, and emotions that you have experienced, make up who you are. They are all little ingredients that make you, you! Imagine it like one of those pictures of celebrities made up of tiny pictures of their fans. Every snapshot, every conversation, every early morning coffee, make up the masterpiece that is your life. And the best part? No one picture defines you.
So now the real question is:
What are you made of?
