The Nikkor 26mm pancake lens on a Nikon Zf.

Sitting on a wood bench in the afternoon light, I was listening to flowing water and basking in the warm winter sun.

The gulls splashed and bathed in the long slender pool that spanned the wide concrete concourse where I sat. Water tumbled off the back side to the gardens below, which stretched for some distance northwest until halted by a row of tall buildings anchoring the west side of the San Francisco skyline. Nestled in the middle of the sky rises were the red bricks of St. Patrick’s Church.

Atop the Yerba Buena Gardens with the San Francisco Skyline in the background.

My Nikon Zf sat in my lap. The Nikkor Z 26mm was the only optic I had with me that day. As I moved from location to location, the tandem hid inconspicuously inside my jacket, only to be revealed when I spotted a subject.

There are a number of ways to approach street photography. You can place yourself in the middle of a busy urban intersection and chase what catches your eye. Or, you can find a location that’s interesting all by itself, then wait for people to pass through it.
