How I Put Together a Photography Workshop

5 Steps to a Successful Event

Rolling into Durango, CO from Hesperus, near Four Corners.

Two days ago my car was in Durango, CO. I was there with it, leading a photography workshop.

We’re both home now. The interior hasn’t been vacuumed yet, but I did dislodge the bugs from the front grill and hose off the outer layer of dust.

Photography workshops have as many moving parts as the car that takes me to them. If everything goes right, they both run reliably and on time. If not, I pivot and chart a new course to reach our destination.

Here’s what I’ve learned over the years to make that happen.

Location, Location, Location

Finding the right place is a key to success. At first you may think that any dramatic location will work. “Let’s go to Niagara Falls! They’re stunning.”

Indeed they are… for one day, maybe even for only half that time. So, what are you going to do the other three days?

A good photography workshop location provides a variety of settings that keep participants engaged for multiple days. Our latest event in Durango is a good example.
