iPhone 15 Pro versus Compact Camera

The Travel Camera Conundrum

For someone who, if cornered with a sharp stick, would call themselves a travel photographer — I haven’t been able to travel much since the pandemic began. My last international trip was to a friend’s wedding in Tuscany, Italy last year. I really struggled to decide what camera to take — or even whether to take one at all. Part of me was saying, “It’s a quick trip with a lot of driving, best keep it light — you can just use your phone.” The other part of me was saying, “Are you absolutely mad! This is Tuscany we are talking about here.”

I ruled out my Fuji X-T4 and zooms. I needed something compact and lighter. Next to drop out of the running was my Sony RX100v. I bought this back in 2016. It launched just days before a Southern US road trip and I managed to find a Best Buy with stock just in time to bring it with me. It still reminds me of its US roots by nagging me that I am set to PAL video mode every time I switch on — thanks Sony.

On that road trip, it proved to be a great B-cam to my then A7Rii. It was great for those occasions when the A7Rii would have been too cumbersome or conspicuous.
