Don’t Think About It Too Much

Overthinking is like paralysis.

“Done saying I’m done playing.” — Drake

Whether you like his music or not, Drake is undeniably a legend.

From his production choice to some of his lyrical content, he has timeless music that only gets better as time goes by. I guarantee some of the songs that didn’t hit for you when you first gave a listen back then — hit now.

The lyric above reminds me time and time again to do less announcing and more doing. I imagine Drake was definitely in his head a little too much if he had to say that.

Following the career of legends in things you enjoy is a no-brainer and free game.

They embody the process.

All the emotions you have experience in doing the thing that you love are not exclusive to just yourself. The best of them have taken more loses than the number of times we have probably taken a shot.

Mental toughness is a requirement to go the distance.

Not getting claps on any of your articles?

Charge it to the game.

Your boss didn’t like your dope idea?

Keep going.

Crush just rejected you?

No problem, next.

These are all external problems that could affect your state of mind. Self-pity comes to mind when I think of these scenarios, and you can bet that it can paralyze the best of us.

Listen.

External problems will always arise.

Let’s not make things harder than they have to be by creating more problems — overthinking can and will destroy your momentum.

Often times we will think our way out of doing something before we even start.

“I’ll do it tomorrow.”

“What if I’m not good enough?”

“I have the whole day, I’ll do it later.”

STOP IT!

These last couple of weeks I caught myself feeding into my excuses. I wasn’t making it to the gym, I wasn’t writing because I didn’t have “good” ideas, and was eating like shit because “everyone dies eventually.”

“Excuses are the tools of the incompetent, used to build bridges to nowhere and monuments of nothingness.” — Barack Obama

The excuses I used as a cop-out weren’t valid enough to stop me from doing what I intended to. Beyond the excuses were deprecating thoughts that pinned me down more and supported my excuses to not do a damn thing.

Maybe you can relate.

I wrote all of this to simply say don’t think about it too much.

Make a plan and do what you said you were going to do!

If you planned to exercise at 6 pm today, don’t give the plan another thought. Consider all relevant thoughts in the planning process and do it!

Eventually, you will get into a state of habit, and only the utmost valid excuses will make you break the chain.

Turn off your brain for a second and get to work.

Stay Blessed!
