Freedom Is An Everyday Choice

Kind Reader,

I think you know what it’s like to feel trapped, to feel helpless.

I don’t only mean your body, but also your mind and your feelings as well. I may not have felt this as deeply as you have, but I have been there, trapped in my head behind a bunch of fears, worries, and doubts.

You must agree that this is not a comfortable place to be and to some degree, you don’t look forward to it. You may find me a bit bold in saying this, but I truly believe on the most fundamental level that we choose to be trapped.

Let us make sense of this together

I have only ever heard stories of people trapped in concentration camps and jails cells, from the books I read and a family of police officers. And as a human being, it is difficult to avoid being a slave to my emotions, especially with little guidance growing up.

But from all that I have learned from myself and others, I am more convinced than ever in believing that our bodies may be trapped, our emotions may flare, but we will always have power over our mind, power over our Will.

There are many ways we could be trapped, mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually, or financially. But nothing can take our Will without our permission.

It’s called Psychological Freedom

We are all blessed with this wonderful power. But, the sad part of reality was best explained by Plato when he said that no soul is willingly deprived of the truth.

Some people just don’t know.

They don’t know that they can develop a strong Will with the choices they make. They don’t know that each day is an opportunity to cultivate their inner-peace. They don’t know that their choices have a deeply profound effect on their soul. An effect that can make them hate themselves or love themselves. And this becomes the role they choose for their lives…

Back then, Marcus Aurelius knew that it was “essential to constantly keep this in your mind, for it will make you more gentle to all.”

I really want you to know that if you ever choose to journey towards your freedom, you will have to face many people who believe that they are no longer free.

In some way, they will have an influence over you, but you must accept this and stay strong along the way because, with every battle that you face, you strengthen your Will.

And very often it will feel impossible but remember, the only way to deal with an unfree world, as Albert Camus said, is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.

And for as long as you live, this will always be a worthy fight because “everything that is really great and inspiring is created by the individual who can labor in freedom” — Albert Einstein.

If there is anything you take away from this, I would love for it to be these:

All Freedom Begins In Your Mind

If you feel you have no freedom in your life, think again. Your body may be trapped, your emotions may run wild, but you will always have your Will within your control.

This is the root of your being that has the power to control your emotions and free your body. This is where you begin to regain your freedom and nourish those roots to grow deeper with every passing day. If you were to commit to something in your life, choose this. And soon, no matter the situation, you will always be stronger than your struggles.

“To find yourself, think for yourself.” — Socrates

Freedom Comes In Many Forms

It is a general term that can be applied to all aspects of your life. Physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, financial — the list goes on. You have a choice each day to follow what is right and be free, or to follow what is wrong and further trap yourself.

As you face each choice, you do feel what is best for you. I too have that feeling deep down, far beyond all of my distracting thoughts, telling me what’s best for me. And from my experience, the sooner you listen, the sooner you will gain your freedom.

“Freedom is nothing but a chance to be better.”-Albert Camus

This may be the best one yet:

Your Soul Pays Attention To The Choices You Make

They leave an impression on others, yes, but your soul is effected by every choice you make. This is why many unknowingly decay their souls. But you don’t have to be one of them because you now know that you alone have the power to nourish your soul, deepen your roots, and maintain your inner peace.

And I know that you feel it deep within with every choice that you make. I feel it too. The moment when this made the most sense was when I read Abraham Lincoln’s quote: when I do good I feel good, when I do bad I feel bad, and that’s my religion. Every choice has the potential to align you with your soul — remember that well for it is your soul’s respect that you ultimately seek.

Stand for what’s right. Make your life beautiful. Make your life meaningful.” — Maxime Lagacé

Nelson Mandela said it the best, There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere. The resistance is something that we must all face. And many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountaintop of our desires. But it all starts from within.

Every choice that you make is deeply felt by your soul. You’re no longer deprived of the truth. And you’re responsible for your freedom. This is a choice you make every day. It’s a choice that discourages many, but I have a strong feeling telling me that you are different…

For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” — Nelson Mandela
