Before you finish your audiobook, read this …

Have you ever felt that you did not listen to an audiobook, even if you know you did?

Can you relate?

No worries, I have felt that way too.

I am a big fan of reading books.

Investing time in going through the knowledge of books and then using them in my life is a great experience.

Also, seeing the results of of these books in my life is a great feeling.

Especially audiobooks, which have been great for me. As I can listen to audiobooks while I work out, a long commute, or cleaning my house.

However, I have noticed that after I finished listening to the audiobooks, if I did not use the knowledge I gained from these audiobooks, I did not see any changes in my life.

Thus, I felt like I had to listen to the book again because I forgot the ideas that there were on these books.

Nonetheless, as I kept listening to audiobooks, I have learned ways to get the most of listening audiobooks. This way, I got the most out of the time and money I invested in listening to the audiobook.

Hence, I want to share these ways I have learned through the years.

Listen To Them More Than Once

When I listened to an audiobook for a second time, I noticed things I glossed over the first time I listened to the audiobook. This also happened to me when reading physical books.

But the great thing about audiobooks is that you can increase the listening speed, which .

“Repetition is the key to real learning.”

— Jack Canfield

Also, when I listened to them the second time, I would re-learn and internalize the ideas.

So, I would understand them in on a deeper level, and it was easier for me to apply them in my life later.

Find And Write Down The Key Lessons

After you have listened to the audiobook more than once, then, identify and write down the key insights from the audiobook. Try to write down everything you remembered.

You can write them down in a notebook or on your computer. The key is to have them written down so you can internalize them. Also, have them accessible to you so you can apply them later.

Here are some things I did, and you can do too:

  1. Use book summaries on YouTube or articles to help you identify the key points.
  2. Use any supplementary material that comes with the audiobook (if any)

Using book summaries is excellent because you can write down any idea that you while listening to the audiobook.

It might be tempting to skip listening to the audiobook and jump right into the summary.

However, when I just read the summary, or idea in the audiobook and did not appreciate the value that it would have if I used it in my life.

Apply The Lessons To Your Life

Applying the lessons you learned is the most important step. You have to test them out in your life.

If you don’t do it, then nothing will change in your life. Your life will stay the same, and you I noticed this, especially with personal development books.

“to learn and not to do is really not to learn. To know and not to do is really not to know.”
― Stephen R. Covey, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change

When I didn’t apply the knowledge in the books, then I felt like I didn’t even listen to the book.

Here are some things I did, and you can do too:

  1. Write 1 lesson on your calendar or planner and do it consistently
  2. Set reminders on your phone or computer
  3. Apply the lesson for a minimum of 21 days
  4. Reflect and evaluate your progress

When I started to apply 1 lesson at a time and take action consistently, I would begin to see improvements in my life. Sometimes I would apply more than one key insight at a time, depending on the complexity of the idea or how busy I am that week.

Nonetheless, the key is to start applying . This way, you start building positive momentum in your life. And as you keep building momentum, you can keep going.

On the other hand, when I didn’t apply the critical insights from the audiobook for a sustained period, I would not see too much progress.

Sometimes you can feel discouraged if you don’t see results quickly, but the key is to keep doing it. I like to do them for about a month at a minimum before evaluating my progress, but you can adapt a period that suits you.

Something that helped me a lot was to reflect and evaluate my progress after applying the key insight from the audiobook.

I would internalize the teachings and look back on the positive changes I have seen by applying the insights in my life.

When I reflected on my progress, I started to feel good because I committed to making a positive change in my life, not only by acquiring knowledge but doing something with it.

During this process, I learned that if I didn’t apply the knowledge I acquired from the audiobook, virtually nothing happened in my life, and I didn’t see any changes.

Thus, I felt like I wasted my time. On the contrary, when I did apply it, I felt great.

So, the importance of applying knowledge from these books was a good lesson for me.

Making sure you get the most listening to your audiobooks can help you maximize your time and money investment.

Also, by making sure you apply the knowledge you learn from these audiobooks, you can see positive changes in your life.

However, you have to commit to take action and apply what you learned from these audiobooks in your life.

This way, you can start seeing results.
