Why I was not the one!

Last week, there was a recognition ceremony at our workplace. For some reason, I don’t know why I had a feeling that I might get some kind of an award too.

I always do what I am supposed to do, never late on any of my tasks, get things done and everyone seems to like what I do. I can confidently say, I am pretty good at what I do. So, I thought — Why not!

As you may have guessed by the title, I was not recognized. It did hurt a bit, not much for not being recognized, but for having the feeling that I might be! By some retrospection, I realized, I should have never had that feeling in the first place.

Considering — late arrivals, early closures, train delays, REAL train delays, half-days, doctor’s appointments, electrician appointments, long lunches , coffee breaks, untimely breakfast breaks, short personal calls, long-important-personal calls, extremely-long-personal-unwanted calls, all the time spent reading news, checking scores, tracking stocks, Crypto chats — oh my GOD!

To hell with the recognition, I am so glad I still have my job 🙂

So, I realized, doing your job is your JOB. You don’t get recognized for doing what you are supposed to do. Look at all those people at work, who you think are getting preferential treatment, promotions and raises or getting those awards per se.

Give your-hurt-self a break, step back and look at them without envy, jealousy or malice in your heart and you will see that extra-mile they are going beyond what they are supposed to do. You will see their dedication, work ethic, sacrifices they make and all those things you usually dodge.

You move up the ladder, only if you outperform your current role. Be it your job, or your business, if you only do what you are supposed to do, you will only get what you are supposed to get.
