…and the worst of times. When life implodes in only a few days

In a Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens writes: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness…, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.”

Such evocative words and I admire him being a “glass half full” kind of guy in not forgetting the positives during a trying time.

But dammit — sometimes that is very hard to do!

Sometimes life just comes crashing down and it is hard to think of any “bests” in amongst all those “worsts”.

And maybe some of the things going on in your life aren’t terribly harrowing or taxing on their own, but taken in a series of events, when you can feel more and more pressure piling on to your shoulders every day, it just takes one thing — even sometimes only a tiny thing — to bring your heart, soul, mind and body crashing down.

The proverbial straw has landed.

This happened to me this week. Lots of things have been going on. The most overwhelming (or so I thought), the nursing of my mother-in-law at her home on the other side of the world to where I live as she passed away from cancer. To…
