My wife and I were in a long-distance relationship for years before we were finally able to move in together.

We lived a total of 10 hours round trip apart, so all we had was our video calls to keep the feeling of connection alive.

We could have never made it without actively working on improving our listening skills.

I learned that this is not something that comes naturally for many people.

We typically tend to listen in order to respond and not to hear.

And before a person even stops speaking I’m already thinking about what I’m going to say when they are done.

There was a scientific study done on this phenomenon which determined that such an attitude toward communication with someone actually causes an inner feeling of disconnect between people.

This coupled with the physical distance makes long-distance relationships extremely difficult to maintain.

So when your partner is speaking, really try to be with them and to feel their words without any distracting thoughts.

Give them your undivided attention. Then your response will come as an addition to what they feel.

Thus, a greater sense of connection between you can be born.
