Want to Be Successful? Appreciate How Far You’ve Already Come.
You’ve seen some shit, you made it through to the other side, and that’s worth celebrating.
It is so incredibly easy to get wrapped up in the “journey to success.”
For most of us Millennials, we typically see that as financial success, from which all other forms of success seem to spring out of. (Spoiler alert: this is false.)
Especially those of us who are building a business or a side-hustle, or trying to improve our health in some way, or even growing a new relationship. We tend to get wrapped up in our goals and the dream future we have imagined for ourselves, and we end up putting too much pressure on ourselves to achieve that future.
This isn’t to say that having those vivid dreams isn’t useful; you have to know where you’re going and know deep in your being that your vision is inevitable.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t enjoy where you are right now. In fact, it’s just as important to take that perspective of appreciation and awe over how far you’ve come and who you are today.
Take a moment and compare your current self with yourself this time last year. Can you even imagine being that person anymore? I can’t.
This time last year I was still digging myself out of the worst health crisis I’ve ever personally experienced. I was extremely undernourished, fatigued, stressed, and uncertain about my future.
Today, I know exactly what I want, my health is improving every day, and I’m on track to be the healthiest I’ve ever been by the end of 2020. I’m also on track to be completely self-employed by next year, living in my dream apartment, and living the independent, free life I’ve always dreamed of.
I’m not there yet, and I want to be there, but I’m also perfectly content with where I am now.
The Power of Set It and Forget It
There’s a balance you have to strike with knowing where you’re going and being present and enjoying your life. Because guess what? If you’re not enjoying where you are right now, you’re never going to get to where you want to be.
Gratitude, love, and joy are forces in the world that bring us more of what we want.
It’s a bit of a paradox, you have to come up with a vision of your dream future, flesh it out in detail, envision it with all your heart and soul, and then just… let it go. Trust that you’ll get there and go on with enjoying your life. Opportunities will unfold for you to get there in the best timing.
What won’t get you there is obsessing over it, tapping your watch wondering why it’s not here yet, and forcing yourself to do the things you think will get you closer to it.
They might get you closer to it, but you won’t be happy, and then what’s the point?
Set it, intend it, and move on. Follow your intuition and notice opportunities as they arise. Follow your passion and curiosity. Enjoy your life in the present. Love and be loved. Be grateful every day. Then, before you know it, you’ll have achieved your vision.
