What Does It Mean to Hunker Down?

“They should really hunker down.” — Doctor Fauci

A video came over the TV today; thousands of people were bathing in Florida. You wouldn’t have even known that there was a war on…and it’s igniting some anger. Because we are in a war against the coronavirus.

This does not help.

Doctors and scientists, like the National Institute Of Allergy And Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Fauci, are strongly urging the public to stay home and not mingle. This video shows mingling heaven.

But medical professionals want us to hunker down.

It turns out that the word “hunker” has a serious history. It’s related to the words “Buckle down” and goes all the way back to the 1800s.

To “hunker down”, one needed to put armor on before heading into battle. The words are totally appropriate for what we are facing as a world heading into the coronavirus. Yes, hunker means squat…
