Some stories breathe to take shape through other people — to deliver an extraordinary message of the human spirit that can motivate us all. This story was told to me twice. Could have been the original storyteller forgot he told me the first time, or the universe needed me to hear it again until the proverbial penny dropped.

There are no coincidences. Everything happens for a reason. I don’t believe in chance encounters either — we meet people for a reason, even when it’s brief. Everyone we meet brings forth a message for us to hear at the right time if we listen with an open mind.

I met Eric three years ago when searching for someone to install my home security products. I discovered his name on the company website. From the moment we met, there was something special about this young man. He was polite, personable, and competent.

It didn’t take long for him to reveal himself as an open book — happy to share features most people keep tucked inside. He went about the installation as if he could do it in his sleep. He didn’t mind talking or explaining in layperson’s terms how to use or get the best system performance. I’ve called on him several times for subsequent installations at my mom’s home to keep her…
