Why Do We Travel?

The reasons may be deeper than we think

For most people, the simple idea of traveling creates an immediate spark of excitement. We claim that we love traveling. But what do we found while abroad? What are we looking for? Why would we spend money and time, while getting totally out of our comfort zone, just to go somewhere else?

I’ve been traveling regularly for the last five years, whether in Europe or in faraway places such as Hong Kong or Bali. I love it, and it feels like I’m at the same time looking for something and finding something out there, without knowing exactly what.

So I questioned myself. Here’s what I found.

It centers our mind

The simple fact of standing out of our known world centers and focuses our mind. You are not acting on auto-pilot anymore, just like you do when you go to work or come back from the gym on a daily basis.

When you are standing under fruit trees, on the terrace of a country house in the South of France, as night slowly falls and you can smell the sweet aroma of nature while hearing the noises of the first nocturnal insects waking up, you are in the moment.
