In any big city, students are often confused when it comes to deciding which area to live in. Home to one of the most sought after public university in Nigeria, Awka is no exception.

If you’re still wondering where you should live in Awka, look no further.

Here are the best student areas in Awka in no particular order:

Kwata

Located along the enugu-onitsha express way, kwata is not known to be a popular student area, mainly because of its distance to school.

Whilst this isn’t a student-dense area, rental prices are, on average, cheaper than the city centre. So if you want a relatively central location, distance is not your problem but want to spend slightly less on your rent, live near kwata.

Unizik Junction

Unizik junction also popularly referred to as “Temp site” (really don’t know the actual name of this place till now) is also a densely populated student area.

Just under fifteen minutes away from uni, Temp site is a hotspot for independent shops, restaurants, bars and, of course, student flats.

Location-wise it’s more convenient for Anambra University teaching hospital students, but Nnamdi Azikiwe University students wouldn’t be too far from the either.

If you’re a student who loves space, accessibility to bus parks when going home, weekend brunches and hanging around in hotels and lounges, Temp site is for you.

Aroma

Aroma, considered as Awka’s city centre by some, is a great area for students for a number of reasons:

Not only is it close to both Anamra teaching hospital and Nnamdi Azikiwe uni, it’s also where you’ll find the bulk of Awka’s shops, restaurants, bars and clubs combined.

Because of their central location, student apartments in Aroma tend to be less affordable than those in other parts of the city.

If you don’t mind paying a little extra for the convenience of living here Aroma is ideal for you.

Ifite

Close to both Aroma and Unizik Junction, Ifite popularly known as “perm site” is another residential area that’s popular with Nnamdi Azikiwe University students.

It’s within walking distance of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University back gate, so it’s naturally a popular choice for students living in private housing during their second years and beyond.

Ifite is filled with supermarkets, shops, lounges and restaurants — most of which cater well for the area’s bustling student community.

This is a student-dense area, rental prices are, on average, cheaper than the city centre. So if you want a relatively “student village”, distance is your problem but want to spend slightly less on your rent, live here.

Okpuno

Similar to Aroma, Okpuno is filled with residential houses — with students, and staffs from both the Anambra University teaching hospital and Nnamdi Azikiwe University choosing to live here.

It’s not much of a lively area for student living, but can sometimes feel like a chance to take a break from the “student hustle and bustle”.

The main drawback of living here is the transport fare and the distance going to and from uni!

Regina

Regina borders Unizik Junction, Okpuno and Aroma, and is another popular student area in Awka.

Like Unizik Junction, students mostly live in residential self-contain houses here.

The area is filled with smaller supermarkets, lounges and a handful of restaurants — which basically means you don’t have to venture very far on lazy weekends.

Again, just like Okpuno, expect to battle with distance and transport fare. Every day.

Amansea

Just like Ifite, Amansea is home to a Nnamdi Azikiwe student village, where you’ll mostly find first year students.

There are also private options outside the village, and residential houses for students staying here after their first year.

Overall, Amansea has a quaint, green environ, and is a short bus ride away from school gate.

If you’re a fan of the great outdoors — live here.
