Livepeer entered 2023 on a high with the December launch of game-changing new capabilities for video NFTs. Plus we heard, and saw, some exciting initiatives from Livepeer’s orchestrators.

All the while, the network was busy bringing creative visions to life. In Q4, Livepeer transcoded more than 42 million minutes of video — a 16% increase from the prior three months and a 44% rise from Q4 2021. In the State of Livepeer Q4 2022, crypto analytics firm Messari said the strength of demand proved Livepeer’s focus on web3 app builders was paying off.

Livepeer Leads the Way With Long Take NFTs

Up until now, creators have had to compromise on preserving their storytelling and artistic vision due to limits on file size on video NFTs. Leading NFT marketplace OpenSea currently supports a maximum size of 100MB, and recommends even smaller files to speed up load times.

Now, thanks to the Long Take NFT Publisher, there’s no need to cut your videos short! Built with Livepeer Studio and powered by Livepeer, Long Take NFTs allow a creator to mint a video NFT from a file of up to 10GB and share it on any NFT marketplace. Even better, Long Take NFTs ensure optimal playback for viewers on all devices and bandwidths.

With this tool, it’s super easy to process and mint high-quality video NFTs in moments. Connect your wallet, upload your video file, hit create — and you’re good to go.

This video offers a step-by-step guide on how to create your own Long Take NFT, along with how to share your freshly minted creations on your chosen marketplace without (did we mention already?) facing pesky file size constraints! Add in automatic distribution of royalties and the ability to mint once, share anywhere and you can see why we’re pretty excited to see where you take this new superpower.

Orchestrators Steal the Show…

The first-ever Orchestrator Award Ceremony broke yet more new ground for the Livepeer community. The event proved a fabulous way to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of 2022 — not least of which was record levels of transcoding despite tough market conditions.

Orchestrators are the lynchpin of this success. Not only do they provide the processing power the network needs, they fuel innovation through mutual support, collaboration, and guidance and support for new community members.

Event organizer @Titan_Node, with help from fellow orchestrator @Chase1Media, created 30 awards in recognition of these achievements. Award winners were presented with commemorative NFTs featuring incredible artwork — and some special easter egg surprises!

Developers: It’s Now Easier Than Ever to Include Great Video Content

When much of the world was in holiday mode, our technical team was hard at work on a new release of the Livepeer application programming interface (API) and software development kit (SDK) to make sure everything was in readiness when the new year dawned.

Highlights include support for new file formats and an increase in upload file size to 10GB, plus an upgrade to video-on-demand reliability that improves playback quality, pending uploads, concurrent uploads and API monitoring. With the network now supporting all video container formats and codecs (compression technologies), it’s easier than ever for developers to include great video content in whatever exciting new apps and use cases they conceive.

Beem X Livepeer: An Exciting Collab for Web3 Video Utility

December also saw Livepeer announce an exciting new partnership with Beem, a video toolbox for creators, communities and brands that want to build their own platforms. Livepeer is keen to support Beem’s growth trajectory and to collaborate on building the features its platform needs.

Beem combines the best elements of platforms like YouTube Live, Eventbrite, and Patreon in a web3-native platform for filmmakers. Users can upload and share videos, host interactive events, create customized spaces, and earn from them using a range of monetization features.

The strategic partnership will see Beem leverage Livepeer’s decentralized infrastructure in both livestreaming and video on demand use cases to do what they do best — even better.

Together we’re focused on pushing the boundaries of what web3 video can do!

…And Get the Last Word!

Beem was helpfully on hand on December 15th to stream the latest Livepeer Orchestrator Community Call, where discussion ranged from the “aggressive roadmap” of network updates with lots of cool new features in store, to transcoding optimization, protocol security, and more.

Blockchain technology may be the tool but it’s people who make it work — that was the message that came loud and clear from an eight-strong group of orchestrators who have formed a transcoding pool to discuss the ins and outs of being a Livepeer orchestrator. As one member described it “Transcoders are the gateway to the platform.”

They are also the gateway to what looks set to be a terrific 2023.

Catch up with the call here. And we’ll see you in February!
