Update on June 16, 2021: Livepeer is now running live against The Graph’s mainnet network. Read our post below to learn more about how we are partnering with The Graph to further decentralization in the streaming video space.

Last week, Livepeer became one of the first ten mainnet migration partners on The Graph Protocol, an indexing protocol that allows anyone to build and publish open APIs known as subgraphs. The first wave of migration partners also includes Audius, DODO, Enzyme, Gnosis, mStable, Opyn, PoolTogether, Reflexer, and UMA. Partners were selected from across four verticals: DeFi, NFTs, Entertainment, and Video.

Livepeer is fostering decentralization in the video space with an infrastructure that allows developers to build apps that let people stream through an open-source, Web3 architecture. Traditionally, creators of streaming video were forced to pay hefty fees for services such as hosting, storage and transcoding. Livepeer frees them from the weight of these traditional cost structures through a decentralized network built atop the Ethereum blockchain and sustained by thousands of video miners and tokenholders.

The Livepeer network operators now have enough computing power and capacity to encode all the real-time video that flows through Twitch, Facebook and YouTube combined. This is the kind of power that can help make Livepeer the primary infrastructure for the entire streaming industry. And people have noticed: Livepeer has seen strong growth over the past year, recently processing over 850,000 minutes of input video in a single week.

Livepeer’s subgraph has been on The Graph’s hosted service since in 2019. As a mainnet migration partner, we are excited to gain increased reliability, global coverage, and resiliency in our applications by leveraging The Graph’s network of decentralized indexers. Livepeer node operators rely on The Graph for important realtime pricing information and performance data, and a highly available decentralized network will bring tremendous benefits over a single hosted service. This is the promise of web3 in action.
