I wish I could say I won’t go, go, go

A few weeks ago, I got some news that I’d hoped never to hear.

After four years of working mostly remotely, only being required to come into the office once per quarter, the new Vice President in my division announced during a town hall meeting that after Labor Day, everyone apart from clinical staff would be required to come into the office twice a week. There will be a few weeks during the year where attendance will not be mandatory such as the week before major holidays such as Thanksgiving or Christmas but otherwise? Our company will be fully hybrid.

Why I like remote work

The news disheartened me. I’ve been with the same firm for the last seven years, which by today’s standards is an extremely long time. My performance hasn’t changed much throughout that time. I get work done in less time at home whereas, before the pandemic, the same amount of work would’ve taken the entire day onsite.

I embraced remote work immediately upon being directed to stay home during the pandemic as the benefits of not going into the office quickly became apparent. For instance, as a racialized woman, remote work enabled me to avoid racist microaggressions as well as sexual harassment. As someone who leans introverted, I avoided the…
