This month, LIVING HEALTH Magazine’s articles are addressing various ways to relax and bring calm to your nerves and emotions. I could not miss the opportunity to reveal one of my all-time favorite and simple ways to escape the harsh realities of life by literally immersing myself in a different world: a tub filled hot water.

It don’t always take the time to retrieve myself from stressful pressures, but when I do, I make it into a small ceremony. Okay, that’s a bit of an exaggeration, I admit, but candle light, ambiance music, hot water with bath salts with oils are important elements that must be present. How often do you allow yourself to be a little selfish and take advantage of opportune moments to let it all go, only to come out on the other side feeling completely renewed?

You don’t need the music nor the candles, but the bath salts are indispensable, and I will explain why. Magnesium, for instance, is proven to the be most powerful relaxation mineral in the world. When you add Epsom salts to your bath, you are in essence adding magnesium sulfates, which has the power to be dermally absorbed, as most minerals do. When your muscles are tight or even soar from exercise, the hot water will open up your pores and the magnesium will penetrate through the skin, traveling directly to the muscles and causing them to relax. Called a transdermal therapy, the magnesium goes to the bloodstream and finally ends up in the cells. This scientific fact is common knowledge among all holistic doctors, but not only that, I am here to prove to you that it works.

For a while, I was using only Epsom salts. After extensive research, I discovered the powerful magnesium chloride and started using it by itself. When my supply of magnesium chloride started running low, I combined it with magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts) and boom! I had just hit the jack-pot of relaxation by increasing the levels of magnesium. This powerful mixture that I found by accident became my go-to solution for stress and pain. I’m a firm believer in bath-salts “therapy” and have been experimenting further with additional ingredients. Let me share this simple recipe with you:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of Epsom salts
  • 1 cup of Magnesium chloride flakes
  • 2 tbs of grey Celtic salt
  • 1 pinch of baking soda
  • 1 tbs. of coconut oil

Directions:

Fill up the bath tub with hot water. One suggestion is to add a filter to the faucet to eliminate as much of the chlorine as possible. Unfortunately, most common household water is treated with chlorine, which also goes straight through your skin into your bloodstream.

In a medium-sized Mason jar, mix the dry ingredients, shake it, and then pour it into the water. I normally have this mixture pre-made and ready to go.

Soak in the tub for 20 to 30 minutes.

Upon coming out, lather your body with coconut oil. In addition to moisturizing your skin which may become dry from all of the salts, coconut oil improves the absorption of minerals.

When you empty the tub, all of the salts will have dissolved and go down the drain without causing your house’s plumbing any issues.

And that’s my secret escape. If you try it and it works for you, please let me know and help spread the word. You can follow our Instagram on @livinghealthtv or twitter on @livinghealthapp and share it with your friends.
