When I worked at the public library I used to love seeing people pick up their holds — the books they’d eagerly been awaiting to be pulled from the shelves for them. Maybe they were brand new books just in from the county or state delivery. Wherever they came from, it made people so happy and the patrons often left clutching the materials to their chests, cuddling them, and it was a joy to watch, one of which we need to see more.

I worked in storage most of the time, but those moments I was up at the circulation desk or in the stacks on the main floor were a treat. It felt like surfacing from underwater; the concrete fortress of the bowels of the storage area was as musty as you’d imagine it to be with the stacks of newspapers and shelves of books which didn’t move very much. There was plenty of dust in the air and clinging to the lower stacks. So it was a thing to enjoy if work in another location was warranted.

If you can believe it, I was once shoved out of the way (gently) so a patron could gain access to materials that I was shelving on the main floor. Apparently, the shiny new books were as exciting to them as to me.

The allure of being around the plethora of insight and ideas is pretty staggering when you stop and look around. As…
