My conversation was part truth-telling and part honest listening, as all great conversations are. It was hard, cold facts rather than dreaming, that other great component of juicy conversations, but they were warranted. We were discussing boss styles and who gets caught in the crossfire. How things differ from generation to generation. It was illuminating as two people of “opposing” platforms came together with similar values.

There’s the emotional content that can never be excluded. Our bare facts notwithstanding, we worked our way to the emotions that inevitably come with leadership. The cycle is unavoidable: facts to feelings. We need reasons to keep invested and motivated. We need reasons to keep going.

It’s like running a marathon. You have to have a solid reason to do it. Something to prove or disprove. Something to love. Something to run to or from. Belief is key, rather than blind following. The entitlement factor will have us balking at notions rather than buying into plans, so we better make it good.

What motivates you? Where do you want to go?

We don’t have to know a clear answer; sometimes the end goal evolves as we approach it. Sure, there’s a deadline or a product, but we can grow it along the way. The stark finish line for any marathon is 26.2 miles — yet how we…
