Bumps

Every day we hit bumps. We bump up against something that triggers us — be it judgment or fear, doubt or anxiety, anger or apathy.

And that’s during “normal” times.

These days I think much of the world is feeling like we’ve gone from what airplane pilots cheerily call “some light chop” to full-on Bette Davis “Buckle your seat belts! We’re in for a bumpy night.”

In and of themselves, bumps aren’t a big deal. It’s what we do when we hit those bumps that is.

Right now, we’re all learning a lot about our “bump behaviors”. We can’t escape the bumpy bits as easily as we could last year — when we could go out the bar or the ballgame, the mall or the movies. When we could plan our next vacation or take an impromptu road trip.

Not only that, we are all coming to realize that if we flail and wail over each bump, the person who is going to be most miserable is us!

Earlier this spring when quarantine was just beginning, I saw this sign buried in a glow of forsythia. It made me smile.

I thought, What if every time I feel a bump, I were to grow a glow of beauty and blooms all around it?
