The Eighth Deadly Sin.

That’s what my dad used to call boredom.

As a little girl, whenever I made the mistake of saying I was bored, my dad — who was pretty much the nicest father on the planet — would arch his famous eyebrow and turn into, well, Vincent Price.

“B-O-R-E-D?” he would roar. “B-O-R-E-D?!?”

And then with a laugh that fell uncomfortably between St Nick and the one my dad used to such terrifying effect on Thriller, he would settle down and share something interesting with me. Be it rocks or flowers or art or clouds. Showing me that right where we were, there was always something about which to be curious — and that boredom was never an option!

My dad (Vincent Price) and me looking at rocks.

My dad used to say: “If you are always curious, you will never be bored.”

Turns out he was right.

I have spent my whole life being curious about anything and everything — and consequently have spent precious little time being bored.
