Stay Close to What You Value in Life
Whenever I need a compass, a pointer, a road map, I return to these immortal lyrics of the ghazal sung by Farida Khanum. The verse is in a combination of the magnificent ancient languages of Urdu and Hindi.
Transliterated freely, it says,
‘Life exists in the clutches
of time
There are only a few moments
One is really free
Don’t lose those priceless
Moments
And be left, regretful,
All your life.’
These lines are open to a hundred and more interpretations.
But what they tell me, is, that the time we have is short. Very short. But we have the freedom to choose what we want to fill our lives with, and who. Let us not lose what we have, and who we have in our lives, owing to prejudice and biases, and unreal expectations.
Stay close to those you love.
Hold on to those who love you.
Try not to create reasons for hatred. Try not to let ego and arrogance destroy love and friendship.
Stay close to those you love.
Hold on to those who love you.
It is so easy to destroy, so difficult to bind again what has been destroyed.
We have all heard that very 'significant' question important people ask at interviews: "Where do you see yourself ten years from now?" But try answering this one, "Ten years from now how many people will I have in my life, who are genuine well wishers?"
And, following that question, "Do I drive people away due to my actions/thoughts/words?"
Do you?
Stay close to those you love.
Hold on to those who love you.
If the choice is between sending that inane Whatsapp forward, and hurting someone in your group, or being a tad less 'popular' by not sending it, what would you rather choose?
Time is short.
Stay close to those you love.
Hold on to those who love you.
The Sun shines today. Go and have a look.
Have a blessed day.
