I am a commuter
Day 1: October 12, 2023
I am a commuter.
There’s nothing wrong with that, considering the impossible rents in Milan that burden students and their families.
I am a commuter, and by living with my parents in Osio Sotto (BG), I share a spacious home and comfortable lifestyles.
I am a commuter.
This choice brings not only economic benefits but also energy savings: I share heating and air conditioning, electricity, car rides and gas.
I am a commuter.
Every morning, I take my scooter (a 125cc) and reach Verdello-Dalmine station, where I board the train that takes me to Villapizzone, where my 20-minute walk to Via Candiani begins.
There, I share classrooms and buildings with thousands of other students.
At the end of the day, it’s a walk, train, scooter, and I’m back home.
I have dinner, relax in front of the television for a couple of hours, and my day ends.
So, yes, I am a commuter, and calculating if I consume less than 4 kW per day appears pretty difficult.
How would you divide the electricity consumed by one of the hundreds of Trenord passengers on a 40-minute journey, on a train fully illuminated?
Yet, after a simplistic calculation, I could say that, despite the endless premises, I believe I exceed 4 kW per day.
Just by working on my computer for around 8 to 10 hours, I consume about 0,9 kW (10kWh for 9 hours).
I charge my phone every night, watch television for minimum 2 hours, move around the rooms, turning on lights (20 Wh * 4 hours), using the hairdryer and electric shaver, not to talk about the domestic jobs that my parents do for me.
In short, a typical commuter’s life.
