Look at the stairs, look how they shine for you!

Living with 4kW per day in 2023

Continuing my previous story, I am still in the challenge of Living on 4 kWh per day, and this time I am trying to reduce the use of escalators by using stairs. I often observe the unique design of stairs in Milan. I assume that the city intentionally designed the stairs to be very attractive so that people are more inclined to use them instead of automatic escalators.

From the data I obtained about the average daily electricity consumption of escalators: A bigger escalator that runs all day and all night in a convention center or hotel — say, a 20-foot-high unit with a 20-horsepower motor — would use roughly 31,000 kWh annually. A continuously running escalator of the kind you’d find in airports or subway stations — 35 feet high with a 40 horsepower motor — would use around 60,000 kWh annually. (For comparison’s sake, the average American home consumes 11,040 kWh in a year.) source:s late.com

So, I am making an effort to use the stairs instead of escalators every day. Not only does this help reduce electricity consumption, but I have also discovered that taking the stairs by skipping 2 to 3 steps at a time can be enjoyable. I use this activity as a form of light exercise. Compared to people who use escalators, this technique can help us reach our destination at the same time or even faster.

It only takes 12 seconds to climb these stairs.

Interestingly, I discovered a global movement with the hashtag #usethestairs. This movement encourages people to use the stairs and engage in enjoyable activities while using them.
