Technology? Maybe sometimes still do more with our hands.

Living with 4kW per day in 2023

When I first came to Europe, I was surprised that almost in each of the household there is a dishwasher. It is not so common in China, where I came from. I heard a lot of rumors and discussions about how dishwashers cannot completely do the cleaning the dishes so me and my roommate decided to try it out. We cleaned the dishwasher and bought the little cleaning block for the dishwasher. We found it super convenient and it is well cleaned plus dried. Coming to Europe was actually my first start using the dishwasher, and from then we started to rely on it.

To be honest, I’m really grateful to this 4kW challenge that we realized how much energy it consumes for only one cycle and within one day if we are all at home. Otherwise, we would not have the thought to specifically go and check the energy consumption of our dishwasher, don’t say that we are also renting the apartment.

We checked the product and the model, and we searched on its websites. We found that for this model the energy consumption is F, which is the second highest on the sign.

We were so glad that after starting to use the dishwasher we thought that we could release our hands and don’t need to mind the washing, and we enjoyed this laziness for one month. Before starting the semester, we spent almost every day at our home, and only sometimes did we buy food from outside. We do cooking, we use a lot of dishes. We used the dishwasher twice a day, basically. But seeing the sign, it consumes nearly 1kWh per cycle, and for one day only by cutting the use of our dishwasher, we can save up to 2kWh. This is already a significant amount of electricity, that we didn't realize how much electricity we could have saved by just doing the work with our hands. Technologies make people become lazy while consuming a lot more energy, sometimes.
