Hi again!

Living with 4kWh a day

Today I want to tell you about the “zero electricity night” that Riccardo (my house mate) and I spent Saturday!

In fact, our others roommates had informed us during the week that they would have not been home with us this Saturday so, now in the midst of the “reduce consumption” challenge, we thought it might have been interesting and, why not, fun, to see what it would be like to spend an evening without consuming a single Watt!

Our evening started early, preparing dinner (a fresh salad) while we took advantage of the last rays of the setting sun.

We then dined by candlelight (literally!), chatting without turning on music, or watching a TV series, or checking our phones.

Once the dishes were hand washed using cold water, the house was completely dark, so we lit the candles we preventively procured!

The apartment was immediately transformed, with an atmosphere that oscillated between romantic and spooky! (Unfortunately, we didn’t take any photos because hey, no electricity, remember?)

But what to do now?

Our evenings at home usually consist in watching a movie or playing with the Nintendo switch together, but both activities were not in line with the purpose of this peculiar evening!

We tried reading a book together but, partly because of the lack of light, partly because of different personal tastes, we got bored pretty quickly and decided to leave the house.

But wouldn’t hanging out with friends or going to a club be considered cheating?

Reluctantly, I admit, we ruled that out as well and went for a walk using public electricity as our only source of light.

Once we got back home, we chatted for a little bit more but, out of ideas, we ended up going to bed at 11 pm! It was the first time in a long time that I went to bed so early on a Saturday night!

It was a fun experience because it was unusual and challenging in an engaging way, like that time we laughed our heads off because one of us distractedly turned the light on!

But what if this was the norm? I don’t think we would be able to handle such a lifestyle for long!

Regards, see you next time

Alessandra
