3 Ways To Avoid the Trap of Self-Comparison
The other day I got caught in the self-comparison trap.
As I was scrolling on LinkedIn, every post was about a person doing great — winning at life. I started to feel like crap. My humdrum life paled in comparison to what my feed thrust into my face.
Quickly I shut the app.
Almost instantly I started to feel better.
1. Cultivate daily appreciation
What I experienced is nothing new in the age of social media.
Users now spend 145 minutes daily. This wreaks havoc on our self-esteem. Because let’s face it, most people post only the highlights of their lives. We, humans, love to fit in. We naturally compare ourselves to others.
So to break this conditioning, I’ve found daily appreciation helps.
I appreciate the fact that food is on the table for me every night. That I have a warm bed to sleep in. That I have the ability to reach so many people through writing. A few decades ago, being any sort of creator like a writer was miles more difficult.
So when you find yourself scrolling down a feed and terrible feelings start to crop up, use appreciation.
It will help you get back to what actually matters.
