Mid-semester slump and how to handle it

So, it’s that time of the year again. No, not Christmas-time or flue-season. But that time of the year where your grades are slipping, you have no energy or willpower to go on. Yup, it’s the infamous mid-semester slump. Luckily, there’s help to be found✌️

It’s the most wonderful time of the year

That’s what we say about Christmas. So the mid-semester slump must be the most terrible time of the year. (That is when you don’t count exam periods, beginning of the semester, end of the semester, and pretty much every part of student life apart from that first week where you’re totally on-top of everything😎) Okay, let’s just agree, Uni-life is hard-life, especially mid-semester, where your motivation is nowhere to be found. You need to study, you know you need to study, but you are just too damn tired to be bothered.

Yup, this time of the year is no fun at all. But there’s a way to avoid being (completely) sucked in. Here at Lix we’ve all been there (some of us still are, RIP). And we’ve made a few go-to-tips on how to pull yourself out of the funk. These tips are based on personal experience, and are not necessarily grounded in research — but hey, if they worked for us 👇

1. Go for a walk

A change in scenery is so, so, so good. Get up, go out, walk till your feet hurts, or till your head is clear. How long that may take. This will boost your energy, and you get exercise, which will give your more energy. So, win-win-win 👊

2. Acknowledge your shortcomings (You can’t do it all and you shouldn’t!)

This is seriously true. You cannot have your cake and eat it too — it’s just too much. Don’t try to do it all, because you’ll end up doing it all half-assed. And that’s no good. So know this, learn it, and live by it 👐

3. Make a plan — planning is good

When you’ve acknowledged your shortcomings, make a plan. Choose where to spent most of your precious time, and where not to. Making a plan helps you stay focused, and the more focused you are, the more you’ll get done.

4. Go visit your parents or some other relatives

Again, change of scenery. And when you visit relatives they often give you food. And free food is the best food. It also means you don’t have to think about anything else than what you put in your plan. 👆 #smart

5. Clean up your room/apartment

A clean room equals a clear mind. It’s true. We all know, and use “the chair”. Cleaning up, washing dishes, and putting those sweaters back where they belong help you to not only declutter your apartment but also your mind 👏

6. Take breaks

Whether your break entails a truckload of beers or a yoga-retreat — go do it. It’s important to take breaks, for your health and sanity. And remember to push away that guilty feeling when you take your breaks. Because you deserve them. #word
