Looking toward the next race: a profile of Hannah Wohlenberg

She was born to run — perhaps a bit of a cliché, but certainly a statement which is accurate of this young woman from Sacramento. A cross-country runner at Loyola Marymount University, Hannah Wohlenberg is still searching for the race that will come after her time at college is over. In her final year of study to achieve her Bachelors in English, the time for a decision is fast approaching, but her experiences in college have prepared her for that upcoming choice.

As a college athlete, Hannah has faced some unique challenges. While these experiences have been both positive and negative, they have helped to define her as an individual. In particular, the times when she has not been able to run — having been injured three times during her college career — she has been led to explore those other parts of her identity not tied to her experience as a runner.

“When you define yourself as a runner, and you have that taken away from you for a period time, you see how damaging that is [to have] your identity taken away,” said Hannah of her experiences of injury.

Outside of cross-country, Hannah is an avid reader, Hannah has gone through many phases in her taste of literature. While she has primarily been interested in fiction and fantasy series, lately she has found herself intrigued by literary non-fiction. During her time at LMU, Hannah has also been involved in a variety of employment positions. These positions have included working for yearbook, as a writing tutor at the University’s Academic Resource Center, and a research assistant. While this assortment has been seemingly random, each job has allowed Hannah to further develop her sense of identity, contributing to her journey to discover what that next step in her life will be.
