NE-HI
If you are a fan of Chicago indie-rock and alternative music you are bound to have heard of NE-HI.
NE-HI’s History
Founded during the humid summer of 2013 in an ephemeral underground DIY basement venue in Chicago’s Logan Square. Three broke college friends — Jason Bella, Mikey Wells, and James Weir — joined together to create NE-HI with the sole purpose of making and recording the score for a friend’s film project.
Thankfully, Wells, Bella and Weir decided recognized how well they all sounded together and decided to keep the band going. Show after show, the band eventually grew their audience and built a strong reputation in the Chicago music scene.
NE-HI broke away from the ordinary, cliche garage-band sound to create a unique musical concoction of thrilling riffs, anthemic choruses with a splash of nostalgia.
Aside from NE-HI’s easy-going, vintage aesthetic and catchy music, the band’s sound seems to reflect the culture of the neighborhood it was created in; Logan Square.
Logan Square
Logan Square is a neighborhood just Northwest of Chicago’s infamous Loop.
The area has long been a home to immigrants and the Hispanic community. However, in recent years the city has begun to refurbish and renovate older buildings into newer — more expensive — housing units, which has consequently resulted in the area’s gentrification.
The area has managed to attract young business professionals, making the community a ‘hispter’ magnet.
The combination of the Hispanic culture with that of the younger members of the community has made Logan Square a lively blend of eclectic shops, restaurants, and record stores similar to the aesthetic of NE-HI.
