Reading offers us an amazing escape by transporting us to a different world where we get to meet a diverse range of characters some of which are even similar to us and more importantly learn profound life lessons.

Since the printing of books, millions of people have found meaning, purpose, and solace in them.

I consider reading to be a privilege of life given that for so much of human history including now so many people are illiterate and don't have access to books.

The internet has changed this but in many parts of the world where the internet is still a futuristic concept, people struggle to get their hands on books.

I believe that reading is one of life’s core skills to develop along with writing.

I also believe that readers are leaders and are much more articulate than non-readers.

Reading helps us with the 3Ps- personal development, personal growth, and psychology.

During this global pandemic where lockdown has become the norm along with self-isolating, reading has become even more important.

Given there are millions of books to choose from, I decided to make your life easier by just listing five truly amazing books from different genres (giving you variety) that I highly recommend you read during this time.

1. Man’s Search For Meaning (Psychology/Self Help)

Author: Viktor Frankl

Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl’s memoir of his time spent in Nazi death camps has captured generations of readers since it was first published in 1946. But, it's not just another book on the Holocaust and Nazism. It’s a mix of philosophy, psychology, psychiatry and spirituality. It’s a book that looks at finding meaning in life through suffering. Frankl argues we cannot avoid suffering, but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with purpose. Man’s Search for Meaning has become one of the most influential books of all time. It continues to inspire one to find meaning and purpose.

I promise- you’ll view meaning & purpose differently after this book, and experience something deep within you that I can't even describe in words.

2. The Rosie Project (Comedy Novel )

Author: Graeme Simsion

An international sensation, this hilarious, feel-good novel will leave you ‘in stitches’ long after you put it down. In fact, you’ll be laughing from the first page. You’ll know you’ve encountered a truly remarkable and unusual character in Don Tillman, professor of genetics who has never been on a second date. Through statistical probability, he concludes that there is someone for everyone, and he embarks on ‘The Wife Project’. The hunt to find his perfect partner — punctual, logical, attractive, most definitely not a barmaid, smoker, drinker, or a late-arrival. Yet Rosie Jarman is all these things. That’s all I can say for now or I’ll be ruining it for you.

I promise- you’ll want to read the full trilogy (three books) after this first one & you’ll take a real liking to the character of Don Tillman.

3. Love in the Time of Cholera ( Historical Romance)

Author: Gabriel Garcia Marquez

The novel has inspired a hundred ‘Love in the Time of Coronavirus’ headlines. This classic has been called one of the greatest literary love stories of all time. Originally published in 1985 in Spanish, it was translated into English three years later. The story takes place in the 1800s on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, South America. It centers around Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza, two young people falling passionately in love. Fermina marries someone else and after nearly 51 years they are reunited. Their love is still strong. Márquez explores death, decay, and the idea of lovesickness as a disease.

I promise- you’ll be touched by the love of the characters and your own love life (even if non-existent) will be brought into focus.
