What Happens When You Equate Fear?

A Drabble is a 100-word short story. Drabble Drops uses a randomly generated word as the challenge but not as a title or character name.
“Equate the unknown to fear,” she said. His pulse quickened as the shadow moved closer, unseen eyes watching. “Why me?” he thought. The clock’s tick seemed to mock his racing heart.
Memories of her laugh and her touch kept him grounded. “You can’t hide,” a voice hissed. His breath hitched. “Equate fear with survival,” his mind countered.
With a swift move, he turned, facing nothing but silence. “Is it over?” he whispered. The echo answered with chilling laughter.
He knew he wasn’t alone. Suddenly, a hand grabbed his shoulder. “Time’s up,” the voice whispered. Darkness enveloped him, leaving only questions.
