Part 1: Google Trends Datawrap

This chart shows the relative Google search trends for three video sharing platforms over their lifespans. Youtube continues to be the dominant video streaming platform, but shows a general downward trend since 2016 while Twitch slowly gains popularity. Since Youtube is older than Twitch and Vimeo it makes sense that it is still the dominant platform. However, with the rise in web traffic in the last few years, fragmentation of audiences, and proliferation of different sites and services competing with each other, other video sharing/streaming platforms will most likely continue to gain more popularity and chip away at Youtube’s monopoly.

Part 2: Pie Charts, Bar Charts, and Range Charts

This visualization shows that 25.6/32 and 160/200 are both 80%. Our brains often make the mistake of looking at the larger numbers and assigning them larger values. But as the charts show, both percentages are equal.

The chart shows the number of touchdowns, interceptions, and sacks, as well as the comp% and QBR of two different NFL quarterbacks in the NFL. Bar charts like this allow the reader to compare two different sets of data for two different subjects and compare them.

This chart shows the change in job growth from 1990 to 2018. The highlighted ranges show periods of recession and are annotated to show precise dates.

Lab 4: Maps

The general trend of the map shows us that on average the cost of tuition and fees for public universities have almost always consistently increased. There is only one state, Ohio, that the cost reduced, and four states, Montana, Iowa, Missouri, and Maryland that have less than 20% increase. All other states have increased 20% or more, and a few states have over 100% growth.

Population Density By State

The map above shows the ranking population density of the states. Bright yellow is more dense, and dark purple is less dense. Population density is an important distinction to consider as California is the most populous state, but it is not the most densely populated, the North East Coast is more densely populated.
