Don’t Shake hands!

Keep a distance from everyone you meet!

Wear a mask!

Eat healthily!

Stop being so lazy!

This is what we have been hearing for a while now, and will be for months to come, thanks to COVID-19.

OK! Not the last one that is just for me.

This unexpected chaos has been an eye-opener for many in the sense of reconnecting them with their Indian roots. Sadly for some, it is their first acquaintance with their own culture.

It took something as drastic as Covid-19 to remind us of a simple ‘Namaste.’ It had lost its essence.

This unwanted virus unknowingly pulled us back to our polite heritage.

The greeting Namaste has been a part of the Indian tradition for as long as it can be thought of. In fact, most cultures have had a greeting that involves no-touch.

Then why did we westernise to high-fives, chest bumps and the awkward side-hugs?

India is known for its faith, spirituality, religion, traditions and well Bollywood.

Is it not then a part of our duty to maintain this image to the best of our capabilities. We want India to be a superpower soon. Will it though make sense if there is no Individuality in India?

Our simple Namaste lost its beauty as we moved ahead in our attempt to make India more advanced and modern. Little did we realise, we were making it a little less of India. I guess it’s important to know what to change and how much.

We picked so much from the west, shifted from lemonade to coca-cola, ethnic wear to ripped jeans, and ‘Hum Panch” to F.R.I.E.N.D.S (I’m guilty of that one too).

We all are guilty of it.

Better late than never, right?

The nation is becoming atmanirbhar, and we all can be a part of it in at least a thousand ways.

Let’s start with a simple Namaste.

Completely shrinking your ego by joining your palms and positioning them close to your face or chest, is a major reason behind the fabrication of this beautiful style of greeting.

We can make a small change by greeting our family this way every morning. Our parents, grandparents, employees, helpers, friends and all those we come across.

Yes, the first reaction you get might not be that great, at least from the teenagers(tried and tested). However, it does create a ripple effect.

If you are still not convinced:

Let’s get reasoning here.

Have you ever thought about the science behind Namaste? I am sure many of you have not.

When we connect our palms in conjunction; the nerves of the fingertips get connected with that part of our brain, which in response creates abiding memories.

In case you don’t like almonds, catch on with the Namaste.

The right blend of Yoga and Acupressure

Let me acquaint you that Namaste is also regarded as a yoga mudra as it assists in the activation of the nerves which help in the circulation of blood and provides balance at your heart chakra.

Moreover, this mudra acts as an eminent acupressure point, which helps reinstate the tension between the fingers.

The therapeutic implications

As this manner of greeting is attached with numerous therapeutic benefits into the bargain, it helps to add cognisance to your brain. Practising it every day brings tranquillity and harmony. It creates an equilibrium between your body and soul, which is why there are diverse regions in the world, where the Namaste form of greeting is being used as a therapy.

Now we also know how it is one of the most hygienic ways of greeting. It is the fastest growing and highest used form of greeting in 2020 all over the world.

It gives me immense pride to see Namaste going beyond the boundaries of Southeast Asia and Indian regions and being executed across the globe.

Feeling tensed?
